The Pods and Central Park Reinvigoration

North Lincolnshire Council, with support from Yorkshire Forward, are creating a new Sports complex to provide a high quality sports facility for Scunthorpe, which will establish the town as a first class leisure destination.  With plans to also reinvigorate the adjoining Central Park, the project as a whole will create a park nucleus for the renaissance of Scunthorpe, an icon of national quality, and a focal point for recreation, sport and leisure.

Through the provision of modern sporting and leisure facilities such as a 25m swimming pool, state of the art gym, and dance studio, The Pods will become a centre of excellence for sports, recreation and a hub for the development and delivery of sports education and leadership training. The unique design for the facility will see the creation of pods covered in natural materials.  It is thought to be the first time in the country that this type of construction has been used for a major leisure facility.

In addition to extensive landscaping improvements including the planting of new trees and the enhancement of the existing boulevard through the park, Central Park will also see new and improved play facilities alongside a refurbished fountain. Work on the project is now underway and is expected to be finished by Summer 2011.  For regular news, photos and video updates on project progress, please visit the North Lincolnshire Council website.
