Young people share their views at the Great Youth Debate!

On the 31st October, the Scunthorpe Town Team took part in this year’s Great Youth Debate in order to gather the views of Children and Young People, and promote the different Urban Renaissance projects going on in the town.  The Great Youth Debate is a sounding board for young people who have something to say on the things that are important to them and is open to children and young people from across North Lincolnshire.  Topics such as bullying and Urban Renaissance were discussed during the debates held in the council chamber at Pittwood House.

Throughout the day, the Town Team facilitated a number of interactive activities designed to raise awareness of the Urban Renaissance programme and find out what young people really think of Scunthorpe and how they would like it to improve.  In one workshop, young people and their families were consulted on what they would do to improve the Town Centre and were asked to represent their views on a giant map of the area.  The opinions gathered from this exercise will be fed into the Masterplan beginning early next year.  In another activity, young people from Inspire Youth Theatre performed sketches illustrating what Scunthorpe might look like 25 years in the future.

Jim Pearson, Town Team Chair said, “It was a really interesting and useful day and I am very pleased that the Town Team were able to take part and promote Urban Renaissance to the young people of Scunthorpe.  Young people are the future of this town and it is vitally important that we consult with them and listen to their views about how they would like to see Scunthorpe develop.  By taking part in events like this, we hope that more young people will want to get involved and help us to shape Scunthorpe into a town with a bright and sustainable future”.
